5 Foods You Should Never Freeze

5 foods that don't freeze well
Freezing is a fantastic way to preserve food, reduce waste, and save money. Foods such as meat, cheese, and mushrooms handle freezing temperatures quite well. But a few foods become an inedible mush after thawing.
1. Fried Foods
Fried chicken or tempura shrimp will lose their crispy coating after being stored in the freezer. During thawing, moisture and oil separate, resulting in a soggy mess instead of a delicious dish.
However, there is an exception: frozen store-bought products (like French fries) maintain their appearance and taste because they are specifically designed for freezing.
2. Hard-Boiled Eggs
Salt can help preserve the yolks, but the whites become rubbery and watery after freezing. So it’s best to enjoy hard-boiled eggs fresh rather than stashing them in the freezer.
3. High-Water Content Vegetables
Lettuce and other high-water vegetables lose their crunch after thawing and instead become mushy.
They can only be used for smoothies or cooked dishes.
4. Yogurt and Cream
The texture of these products changes after freezing: yogurt becomes watery, while cream turns grainy or separates. They are only suitable for cooking but not for whipping or consuming on their own.
5. Soft Cheese
Brie, feta, or cream cheese turn into a liquid mass after freezing. In contrast, hard cheese (especially grated) handles the cold well and can be stored for up to two months.

How to Properly Thaw

Experts recommend transferring products from the freezer to the refrigerator. This is safer for milk, meat, or poultry and helps avoid the risk of foodborne illnesses.

Why This Matters

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, about one-third of food is wasted globally each year. In Europe, the average person throws away up to 115 kg of food annually! Proper storage can reduce this waste and save money.
The freezer is our ally, but only when we know what to put in it. The five products listed above are better off in the refrigerator or enjoyed fresh.
