Renowned New York designer Peter Do, in collaboration with biomaterials company TomTex, unveiled two looks from his Spring–Summer 2023 collection at New York Fashion Week.
The latest eco trend that could reshape how we dress over the next decade is gaining momentum. Biotechnology, already changing industries like manufacturing, medicine, and pharmaceuticals, has now entered the fashion world. Peter Do is one of the pioneers: he crafted garments from a 100% biodegradable material he calls “new non-woven biotextile,” made by processing food waste from mushrooms and shrimp.

TomTex’s material is soft and silky to the touch and has a suede-like appearance. It’s made from chitosan, a naturally derived biopolymer. The company sources its raw materials from Vietnamese firms that collect and process food waste from mushrooms and seafood, including shrimp and shells.
Since its founding in 2020, TomTex has steadily improved the material’s mechanical properties—boosting strength, enhancing its appearance, and refining the biotextile’s market appeal. The biocomposite contains no plastic components!
Would you wear a blouse made from shells or pants made from mushrooms?
