Augmented reality holograms, robotic assistants, 3D-printed transforming walls, obedient screens… All of these, and more, are tools of artificial intelligence embedded in quirky yet practical architectural forms. This reality, which was once the stuff of science fiction, could become an organic part of our lives within just a quarter of a century.
Journalists at the Daily Mail asked futurists how they envision human dwellings in 2050. Those predictions were then fed into the Midjourney neural network, which generated images from the verbal descriptions.
The results were astonishing. They imagine futuristic homes that incorporate many achievements of the technological revolution. Aesthetic living spaces could meet people’s ecological needs and could finally cut harmful emissions.
What Will Our Homes Look Like in Just 27 Years
According to the visions of futurists and AI, the walls, floors, and ceilings of our future homes will transform in response to voice commands. Nanotechnology will turn walls into giant semi-transparent screens. Any surface in a room could become a touchscreen that executes commands from the homeowner.
Experts do not rule out the possibility that a famous cooking-show chef will be running our kitchens — as a holographic version. The chef could appear in our homes with cooking tips the moment we switch on the induction stove.
Our homes will likely be serviced by humanoid androids. The first models are already making waves in the tech market, thanks to companies like Tesla. Experts predict that by 2050, androids will be cleaning, cooking, and even taking care of children.
Augmented reality will fundamentally change the concept of entertainment, says Jan Silvera, editor of Future News. “As we continue to live in the age of smartphones and streaming, our methods of consuming information have drastically changed compared to the television era, when a centralized TV in the home brought people together in one place for shared leisure,” he said. Silvera suggests homes in 2050 will be filled with entertainment capsules for solitude, packed with cutting-edge technology. It’s also possible that architects will design spaces deliberately free of technological innovations.
Mike Ralphs, head of digital technology at Quintain Living, says the walls of future homes will change appearance with just a touch or a voice command. Nanotechnology and augmented reality will display different colors, textures, or even homeowners’ personal preferences. These transformed walls will also serve as interactive screens for virtual communication and information retrieval.
Some experts think living spaces may become smaller than what many people are used to today. As remote work becomes more common, people will spend more time at home. Multi-generational living could also become more widespread.
Ralphs says the real estate market will be dominated by modular homes that change their appearance according to owners’ demands. Advanced technologies that use renewable energy — including systems integrated into building structures — will make future homes highly efficient and allow excess energy to be fed back into the grid.
Ralphs says AI will be present in all future homes.
He adds that by 2050, “AI assistants will anticipate the needs of residents and manage energy consumption.” Voice commands and gesture recognition systems will replace traditional switches and buttons. Homes will be equipped with personalized AI systems to help with everyday tasks.
Additionally, future homes will feature plenty of greenery, both outside and inside. It’s quite likely that our homes will include small farms for growing organic produce.
