Frank Jacobus, a designer and professor at the Fay Jones School of Architecture at the University of Arkansas, has long been fascinated with turning ordinary objects into art. Recently he used the neural network Midjourney to create a series of visual fantasies centered on chairs made from fruit. He calls the collection ‘Fruity’.

For fans of contemporary art, design, and architecture, the Fruity series is a vibrant, whimsical collection of ‘juicy’ chairs and armchairs. Melon, passion fruit, grapes, pitaya (dragon fruit), papaya, pomegranate, and kiwi become furniture—unusual, but undeniably aesthetically appealing.
Image Generation with AI – A New Chapter in Design
More and more traditional artists and architects are turning to neural networks to expand design possibilities, especially in industrial and interior design.
Jacobus says Midjourney and other AI tools ‘are transforming architecture and design thinking, and we can expect significant progress soon.’ He adds that these ‘assistants’ let artists ‘quickly create everything they envision at that moment,’ producing astonishing visuals.
For instance, using Midjourney—an image generator that turns text prompts into pictures—can give even mundane household items extraordinary appearances.
With the Fruity series, Jacobus even convinces viewers that sitting in these surreal chairs could be comfortable.
He also playfully invited fans to imagine that the chairs give off a subtle fruity aroma when you sit in them—maybe the first step toward feeling like a bee or a butterfly.
