Eight years ago, researchers at Dartmouth College and Columbia University demonstrated how to use aluminum foil to create a “virtual wall” that boosts Wi‑Fi coverage around the home.
They showed that aluminum foil can reflect radio waves and improve signal strength. Position it in a semicircle behind the router’s antennas, as shown in the picture.
The team found the trick can double the Wi‑Fi signal in some parts of a house. But there’s a catch: it can weaken the signal in other corners, the Daily Mail reported.

What did the scientists learn?
The researchers didn’t limit themselves to foil during experiments at Dartmouth College. They also studied purpose-built reflectors designed by an algorithm and 3D‑printed for the tests.
Their goal was to find an inexpensive reflector that could boost or reduce the signal where needed. Although the 3D‑printed reflectors performed well, plain aluminum foil wasn’t far behind.
The foil boom on social media
Recently, a user posted the foil trick on social networks and sparked a viral boom online.
The author of the viral post specifically advised: “Place aluminum foil behind your Wi‑Fi router and thank me later!”
One commenter explained: “Aluminum foil behind the router acts as a parabolic reflector, bouncing radio waves forward and concentrating the signal where you need it most.”
Later, another enthusiastic commenter wrote: “It’s amazing that simple aluminum foil can do this with a Wi‑Fi signal. Now I have Wi‑Fi in my room that doesn’t turn off every 5 seconds!”
So, while the hack might seem silly at first, researchers have shown it can work: aluminum foil can improve wireless connectivity.
