The innovative design of the record-breaking Seoul Twin Eye observation wheel, which features a spokeless structure, was created by Dutch firm UNStudio in collaboration with Arup and Heerim Architecture. Seoul’s city government initiated the project.
This double spokeless wheel will rise 180 meters above Peace Park along the Han River. When you add the 40-meter cultural complex it sits on, the total height of the Seoul Twin Eye reaches 220 meters.
This extraordinary attraction from UNStudio consists of two giant interwoven rings. Designers and engineers envision 64 capsules rotating around the rings, each holding up to 25 passengers. The capsules will travel along tracks on both the outer and inner sides of the rings. The Seoul Twin Eye will accommodate 1,400 people at once, nearly double the capacity of the London Eye.
The Seoul government is actively developing public-space infrastructure for residents. This project is one example of that effort, according to Designboom. The cultural complex housing the wheel will also include exhibition space, a concert hall, and numerous shops.
Reaching 220 meters, the record-setting Seoul Twin Eye will offer sweeping views of the city. To make the attraction more accessible, UNStudio has proposed a monorail to connect the site to the nearby subway station. A zip line is also planned for thrill-seekers.
The Seoul government plans to begin construction in 2025, pending approval from the Ministry of Strategy and Finance. The project is scheduled for completion in 2028.
