Beavers are famous for building dams out of wood and branches. They cut the material with strong front teeth and reinforce their structures with grass, mud, silt, and stones. But why do beavers construct dams? Is it just to make a home, or is there more going on? Researchers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and California State University (CSU) explained the reasons in an article for Live Science.
Defensive Fortresses with a Network of Channels
Primarily, beavers build dams to keep themselves safe. They have large, clumsy bodies: beavers weigh between 40 and 80 pounds and have very short legs, which makes them easy prey, says biologist Chris Jordan. On land they are especially vulnerable, a point ecohydrologist Emily Fairfax emphasizes. Bears, wolves, and coyotes will gladly take a beaver if they can. In water, though, beavers are much safer. They are excellent swimmers and can hold their breath for 10 to 15 minutes. By building a dam, they create a pond that serves as a safe zone. Jordan says the ponds are deep enough for beavers to hide from predators, and flooding around the dam gives them easier access to their main food sources—bark, leaves, branches, and aquatic plants. Beavers also dig an extensive network of channels around their structures to ferry food to caches and move building materials.

Where Do Beavers Live?
Dams provide protection, but beavers don’t live in the dams themselves. They usually live in lodge-like homes made from sticks, grass, moss, and mud, placed either in the ponds created by dams or along the banks. In those lodges beavers live in family groups called colonies that average about five individuals. These patterns hold for beavers in Europe and Asia as well, which also build local ecosystems of dams, lodges, and channels.
Beavers: Ecosystem Engineers and Climate Crisis Fighters
Beaver dams benefit many other species besides the beavers. As Fairfax explains, the structures slow water flow and keep more water in the soil, so plant roots can access moisture even during droughts. That helps preserve lush vegetation. When wildfires occur, beaver “housing complexes” often resist fire and create refuges for animals that can’t escape the flames. The vegetation around the dams absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, helping reduce the greenhouse effect, and the dams also minimize flood damage. Reintroducing beavers to their native habitats could help mitigate the impacts of global warming. Analyses of the available data show beavers are well adapted to survive in a changing climate. Furthermore, beavers are already doing some of the climate-adaptation work humans are trying to achieve, Fairfax emphasizes. We will make more progress if we work alongside these ecosystem engineers rather than against them.
