To mark its 70th anniversary, Guinness World Records arranged a meeting between the tallest and smallest dogs on the planet: a four-year-old Chihuahua named Pearl from Florida, who stands just 3.6 inches tall, and a seven-year-old Great Dane named Reginald (Reggie), who measures an impressive 3 feet 3.5 inches.
The meeting took place at Reggie’s home in Idaho. Despite their roughly 36-inch height difference, the two got along famously. Witnesses said Reggie was gentle and careful with his tiny new friend.
Sam Johnson Reiss, Reggie’s owner, said, “When the smallest dog is next to the tallest dog, it’s understandable to worry. But Reginald was very gentle and kind to Pearl.”
Pearl’s owner, Vanessa Semler, added, “I don’t think she has any idea that she’s the smallest dog in the world. When Pearl meets larger dogs, she becomes very friendly and playful.”
As the owners expected, the dogs hit it off, the Daily Mail reported. Semler said Reggie was cautious at first, keeping a bit of distance, which she took as a good sign.
Reiss recalled that Reggie had been the smallest in his litter. No one imagined he would grow so big and make it into the Guinness World Records. Still, Reggie might look “small” next to the 2011 record holder, a Great Dane named Zeus, who reached a staggering 3 feet 11 inches.
