After a party, people often wake with a dry mouth, a pounding headache, and an upset stomach. A bad hangover can keep you in bed all day, maybe nursing a jar of pickle juice.

Cara Shaw says breakfast after a night of drinking should do two things: restore blood sugar and support the liver as it works to process alcohol.

Shaw recommends eating within 90 minutes of waking to stabilize blood sugar, and choosing high-protein dishes.

She also notes that alcohol puts significant stress on the liver and that the liver needs nutritional support. Protein, B vitamins, and antioxidants all help with that recovery.

An ideal recovery breakfast can be a simple, inexpensive omelet. To help alleviate a hangover, it should include the following ingredients:

  • three eggs (which provide protein)
  • half a cup of sautéed mushrooms (which aid digestion)
  • half an avocado (which lowers blood pressure)
  • a piece of feta cheese (which boosts energy)
  • one tomato (which contains antioxidants)
  • olive oil (which has anti-inflammatory properties)

Each ingredient contributes something useful.

Eggs provide protein and choline, a nutrient that helps the liver process toxins, supports muscle function, and can improve mood. Mushrooms contain B vitamins that aid digestion, boost energy, and support liver function.

Avocado is rich in healthy fats and potassium, which can help lower blood pressure. It’s also high in vitamin E, an antioxidant that supports immune function and helps the body clear toxins.

Feta adds protein and vitamin B12 to help restore energy. Cooked tomatoes bring antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. Olive oil contains polyphenols and has anti-inflammatory effects. Together, these ingredients help ease the strain alcohol puts on the body.

Drink plenty of water with this breakfast. Drinking alcohol dehydrates the body, so rehydrating is essential.

Shaw also recommends swapping morning coffee for matcha. Matcha has less caffeine and plenty of antioxidants for a gentler energy boost. Drink it after eating breakfast to avoid a sudden spike in cortisol, the stress hormone.

Good food and fluids can reduce some hangover symptoms, but recovery takes time. It can take at least two days to feel fully healthy again.

British consultant physician Hussein Ahmad says the body processes a single glass of beer or a small glass of dry wine in about two to three hours. If you have several servings, it can take around 12 hours to eliminate the alcohol from your system.
