
A new study from researchers at the University of Alberta (Canada) shows that the cerebellum — a brain region traditionally tied to balance and movement — also plays an important role in more complex tasks like language processing and spelling. Until now, key language areas, mainly in the left hemisphere, were thought to handle those functions.
The cerebellum isn’t just for balance
The cerebellum (Latin: Cerebellum, literally “little brain”) is a part of the vertebrate brain that coordinates movement and regulates muscle tone. In humans it sits behind the medulla and the pons, beneath the occipital lobes of the cerebral hemispheres.
Main functions of the cerebellum
- Movement coordination: ensures voluntary movements are precise, smooth, and accurate.
- Balance and posture: maintains the body’s stability in space and regulates muscle tone.
- Motor memory: supports the automation of skills like riding a bike or playing a musical instrument.
- Cognitive and emotional processes: recent research points to the cerebellum’s role in learning, emotion regulation, and even language.

How researchers linked the cerebellum to language
The team conducted a study involving 33 adults while they performed spelling tasks. The tasks required participants to process sounds, retrieve words from memory, or do both.
The group included people with typical reading skills and others with reading difficulties, including dyslexia.
Researchers analyzed how different brain regions synchronized and interacted with one another during the experiments, Medical Xpress reported.
The analysis unexpectedly showed that the cerebellum has a strong connection with language areas of the brain. The cerebellum’s active involvement in the spelling tasks provided evidence of that link. Its level of participation changed depending on the task type, demonstrating the cerebellum’s flexibility in supporting different linguistic processes.
Although some volunteers struggled more with the tasks, the brain connectivity patterns looked similar across all participants. That similarity suggests the cerebellum plays a fundamental role regardless of a person’s reading skill.
The cerebellum makes up only about 10 percent of the brain’s volume but contains roughly 80 percent of the central nervous system’s neurons.
The researchers hope these findings will help guide future studies of dyslexia and support the development of therapies aimed at improving literacy.
“Studying the cerebellum’s role in spelling will help build more accurate models of dyslexia and make it easier to understand why some people struggle with these skills,” said Jacqueline Cummins, a professor in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine and the study’s lead investigator. The results were published in the journal The Cerebellum.
