While Elon Musk dreams of building a city on Mars for Earth’s settlers, the Japanese architectural firm N-Ark is looking at the ocean right here on Earth. This startup is proposing floating cities as a way to help communities cope with the ongoing climate crisis.

Japanese architects say modern innovation could turn the ocean into a new economic zone that’s resilient to climate change. N-Ark plans to focus specifically on developing technologies for living in ocean environments.

Innovative City in the Middle of the Ocean

Currently, N-Ark’s flagship proposal is a massive floating city called Dogen. It will measure 1.58 kilometers across and stretch nearly 4 kilometers around. Dogen City would be able to accommodate up to 40,000 people, with about 10,000 of them living there permanently.

The project’s founders say the ocean city will be fully autonomous from its surroundings. It would include tourist and medical facilities, and even launch pads for rockets.

Dogen City is being designed to adapt quickly to changing climate conditions. It aims to withstand sea level rise and to provide power, food, and water for up to 40,000 residents.

The circular design is meant to help the city resist harsh weather and tsunamis. But the developers have not yet shared technical details about how they plan to protect the city from natural disasters.

What Will Dogen Floating City Look Like?

The project will be divided into three distinct zones. One will be an inhabited ring that contains the main residential area; this vessel-like shape is intended to enhance protection against tsunamis.

There will also be a data center that houses city management and medical research facilities. The center will be cooled naturally by the sea to help cut energy use.

The third zone will feature floating islands that can move freely within an internal artificial bay. The ring-shaped bay is designed to protect those floating structures.

Infrastructure of the Future Floating City

The Dogen project includes green spaces and food production facilities. The floating city would also feature schools, sports fields, hospitals, parks, stadiums, hotels, offices, and even a launch and landing pad for rockets.

Dogen City plans to use electric vehicles and autonomous drones to reduce traffic and lower carbon emissions. The designers envision smart transportation systems and intelligent power grids.

The project also emphasizes healthcare: residents would have access to telemedicine consultations and robotic surgery.

N-Ark estimates residents will consume about 2 million liters of water per year and generate roughly 3,288 tons of waste annually. The company projects Dogen will produce nearly 7,000 tons of food and 22,265,000 kWh of electricity per year.

Meeting all these needs will be a complex challenge. The company hasn’t released detailed implementation plans yet, but the public visualizations show lots of solar panels and areas for food cultivation.

A Future That Is Already Close

N-Ark believes the floating city could have a big social impact. Dogen City could respond to natural disasters, improve marine environments, and provide shelter for climate refugees.

The project could also have economic effects: innovative architectural technologies might complement traditional shipping and other marine industries.

New Atlas reports there’s no public information yet on where Dogen Floating City would be located, and the project’s budget has not been disclosed. N-Ark anticipates completion by 2030.

As for whether Dogen will actually be built, that remains uncertain. But in a world of rapid technological change and constant climate pressure, the idea of a floating city in the ocean is no longer pure fantasy.
