Hotter Temperatures Linked to a Sharp Rise in Seniors’ Vision Loss

Global warming is worsening eyesight.

Most consequences of global warming are obvious. But researchers have found another, still unclear effect: serious vision decline in older adults may be linked to rising average temperatures.

Warming Leads to Vision Deterioration

A team analyzed survey data from 1.7 million Americans aged 65 and older. Participants reported vision impairment, including blindness or significant difficulty seeing even with glasses. The researchers then compared those responses with average temperatures where the respondents lived.

Older adults living in regions with lower average temperatures (about 10°C) had the best vision. The researchers found that even a small difference in temperature produced a measurable effect.

In areas with an average temperature of 12°C, vision deterioration among seniors was 14% higher; at 15.5°C or above, it was 44% higher.

Lead author Esme Fuller-Thomson called the findings deeply concerning, especially given global warming. Europe is warming about twice as fast as the global average, and the Arctic roughly four times faster. Fuller-Thomson emphasizes the importance of understanding how rising temperatures affect vision in older adults.

The Impact is Noticeable Regardless of Income

Co-author Jidi Deng, a pharmacist, says vision problems are a common functional limitation among older adults. Serious vision impairment raises the risk of falls and fractures and reduces quality of life for seniors.

The link between temperature and vision loss is worrying. It showed up across income and education levels, though age and gender did influence the effect.

Fuller-Thomson says the correlation was strongest among people aged 65 to 79. For those 80 and older, the effect was less noticeable. The pattern was more prevalent among men than women. Across different income groups, the relationship between ambient temperature and vision deterioration remained consistent.

Why are Rising Temperatures and Vision Deterioration Linked?

The primary cause of this pattern is still unclear. Researchers suggest several possible contributors. One theory is that increased ultraviolet exposure in warmer climates can damage the eyes.

Another hypothesis ties the link to lower levels of folic acid, a water-soluble vitamin important for eye health that can break down at high temperatures. Other likely causes include increased air pollution and a rise in infections.

As Earth magazine reports, climate change has wide-ranging effects on human health. Rising temperatures lead to more heat-related illnesses. Air pollution from wildfires and dust storms, made worse by climate change, harms the lungs and increases respiratory problems.
