Meet the Humane AI Pin, the ‘Non‑Physical’ Smartphone You Wear

The Humane AI Pin is a projector you can wear on your clothing. It functions as a non-physical smartphone, projecting apps, calls, and voice assistance onto your hands or nearby surfaces.

Futuristic non-physical smartphone

Former Apple design chief Imran Chaudhri and his team built the device using artificial intelligence. They unveiled it at the TED2023 conference in Vancouver, Canada. The thumb-sized device includes cameras for scanning the surroundings, hidden sensors for activation, and built-in speakers.

During a demo, Chaudhri answered a call from his wife. The pin attached to his jacket projected a ringtone onto his palm.

Chaudhri answered the call not by tapping a green button as on a phone, but with a voice command that activates the call pickup function.

Chaudhri says users don’t need a smartphone or other electronics to connect to the device. Just wear the pin or attach it to your clothing to activate its functions.

The Humane AI Pin shows how futuristic consumer tech is becoming. As Designboom reports, Chaudhri plans to release a wearable projector and smartphone in the near future.

A projector with smartphone functionality

The Humane AI Pin uses optical sensors to enable contextual and ambient computing. That lets it provide seamless, screenless, touchless interactions as a wearable projector and smartphone.

In another demo, Chaudhri asked the pin where he could find a gift for his wife. He placed his finger on the device’s sensors, and after a few seconds the Humane AI Pin returned a specific suggestion: Granville Island in Vancouver.

The non-physical smartphone also acts as a voice assistant and can handle web searches and quick queries. It could also function as a personal assistant — for example, reminding users about health concerns.

Chaudhri demonstrated that by holding a chocolate bar in front of the pin and asking whether he could eat it. The Humane AI Pin described the chocolate and then said, “Considering your allergy to this product, you should avoid it.”

Chaudhri believes artificial intelligence gives people a big opportunity to change their relationship with technology. He says AI will make personal mobile computers faster, more powerful, and easier to use. Chaudhri adds that the first Humane AI Pin will let people carry AI with them everywhere, and his team is eager to launch it this year.
