Such a reality — which until recently was science fiction — could become part of our daily lives within a quarter of a century.
Journalists at the Daily Mail asked experts on future trends how they imagine human dwellings in 2050. These predictions were then passed to the neural network Midjourney, which generated images from the verbal descriptions.
The results were impressive. We can expect futuristic houses that incorporate many achievements of the technological revolution. Aesthetic living spaces will meet people’s ecological needs and help reduce harmful emissions.
What will our homes look like in just 27 years
Futurists and AI envision walls, floors, and ceilings that transform on voice command. Nanotechnology could turn walls into giant translucent screens. Any surface in a room could become a touchscreen as needed, executing the owner’s commands.
Experts don’t rule out a famous TV chef taking charge in our kitchens — in holographic form. The hologram could appear with cooking tips when you turn on the induction stove.
Homes will most likely be served by humanoid androids. Early models are already hitting the market thanks to companies like Tesla. Experts predict that by 2050, androids will be cleaning, cooking, and even caring for children.
Augmented reality will fundamentally change entertainment, says Jan Silvera, editor of Future News. “As we live in the era of smartphones and streaming, our ways of consuming media have changed drastically from the television era, when a single TV brought people together for shared leisure,” Silvera says. He predicts homes in 2050 will include solitary entertainment capsules filled with immersive tech. Still, architects may also design areas in homes that are deliberately free of technological innovations.
Mike Ralphs, head of the digital technology department at Quintain Living, says the walls of future homes will change appearance through touch or voice commands. Nanotechnology and augmented reality will display different colors and textures, or reflect homeowners’ personal tastes. These transformed walls will also serve as interactive screens for virtual communication and information.
Some experts think living spaces may become smaller than people today are used to. And as remote work becomes more common, people will spend more time at home. Multi-generational households may also become more common.
Ralphs believes the real estate market will be dominated by modular houses that change their appearance according to owners’ demands. Thanks to advanced technologies and renewable energy systems integrated into building structures, future homes will become extremely efficient and will feed excess energy back into the grid.
Meanwhile, Mike Ralphs says artificial intelligence will be present in all future homes. “By 2050, AI assistants will anticipate residents’ needs and manage energy consumption,” he says. Voice commands and gesture recognition will replace traditional switches and buttons. Homes will be equipped with personalized AI systems to handle everyday tasks.
Near-future houses will include a lot of greenery, both outside and inside. They may even have space for home farms growing organic produce.
