Why is slow running considered beneficial?
Studies show that leisurely running delivers significant health benefits.
“For instance, slow running helps lower blood pressure, which contributes to a stronger heart,” noted Professor Dan Gordon, a physiologist at Anglia Ruskin University in the UK. He says you don’t need to put your body under excessive stress to strengthen the cardiovascular system.
Slow running is a pace you can keep while comfortably holding a conversation — what coaches call Zone 2. During these workouts, your heart rate rises, but you can still talk. These sessions have become popular because they improve quality of life and may boost longevity.
A 2015 Danish study of mortality rates found that people who ran at light or moderate paces had lower death rates than those who either trained intensely or didn’t run at all, according to Science Focus.
So what makes slow running so good for health? It not only strengthens the heart and its pumping capacity but also benefits the body at a molecular level. Slow running helps prevent metabolic disease, improves insulin sensitivity, increases mitochondrial density in cells, and encourages the body to use stored fat for energy.
A Win for Physical and Mental Health
People who stick with slow running tend to recover faster and are less likely to experience fatigue or injuries from overtraining. As a result, they generally feel better.
Professor Gordon says slow running has big mental-health benefits. It lifts mood and can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, in part because runs are often social activities.
“We’ve fallen into the trap of thinking that high-intensity workouts are the best, but you don’t need to sweat profusely or feel like your heart is about to burst. If you run slower, you’ll still come out ahead,” he says.
He also referenced studies showing that even elite runners spend up to 80 percent of their training at a slow pace in Zone 2.
These workouts build what trainers and scientists call an “aerobic base” — the core engine of the cardiovascular system. During slow running, the heart delivers more oxygen to the muscles and lungs. That means an athlete can run farther, faster, and with less effort. In other words, by slowing down, you can not only run better but also live longer.
