Pangeos: the turtle-shaped mega-yacht designed to be the world’s largest floating city

Like two Colosseums, the turtle-yacht will become the largest traveling city in the world.

A turtle-shaped giant yacht has been unveiled in Italy — a floating city that could accommodate up to 60,000 guests at once.

The Pangeos concept was developed by the Lazzarini design studio, led by yacht engineer and designer Pierpaolo Lazzarini. The designers say their new creation will be twice the size of the Roman Colosseum. They shared a stunning animated visualization of the idea on social media.

Pangeos measures 550 meters long and 610 meters from wingtip to wingtip. According to the design team’s vision, tens of thousands of sea tourists will find everything they need for a comfortable vacation aboard this monumental turtle.

Onboard, there will be hotels, shopping centers, parks, helicopter pads, and even a runway for airplanes, Designboom reports.

The yacht’s name comes from the supercontinent Pangaea, which existed about 335 to 175 million years ago during the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras.

What Will the Futuristic Mega-Yacht Include?

The hull of Pangeos has a 30-meter draft and consists of nine bow sections. It is divided into several blocks.

From the port area, visitors can access a main square that opens onto luxury buildings with rooftop terraces where aircraft can land.

Pangeos is equipped with nine high-temperature superconducting electric motors powered by various onboard energy sources. Each motor delivers 16,800 horsepower. The turtle yacht is propelled by a jet propulsion system and reaches a cruising speed of 5 knots.

As the floating city moves, its wings will harvest energy from waves. Solar panels on the roof will supply part of the vessel’s power. The designers say Pangeos will produce no harmful emissions into the sea or the atmosphere.

Construction is estimated to cost around $8 billion. A significant portion of the expenses will go toward building a massive shipyard/dam infrastructure measuring 600 by 650 meters with direct access to the sea. To raise the necessary funds, the design studio has launched an online crowdfunding initiative.

Building the turtle city is expected to take about eight years. Once the project is realized, Pangeos will become the largest floating structure ever built in the world.
