At the end of a stressful workday, some people unwind with a glass of wine; others prefer a hot bath, and some indulge in their favorite chocolate bar.
However, researchers at Anglia Ruskin University in the UK found that many people turn to takeout food for comfort. According to a new study, takeout was the most effective way to boost mood after work.
The university team also found that takeout food was the top choice for celebrating a successful day.

How Did the Researchers Find This Out?
The scientists recruited 280 volunteers for the study, as reported by the Daily Mail. Each participant was asked to imagine either a good, bad, or neutral workday. They then chose which of five reward options they would pick for the end of the day: an alcoholic drink, takeout food, a chocolate bar, bath foam, or online shopping.
The results showed that participants who imagined a bad workday were significantly more likely to want to treat themselves to takeout food. Following closely were alcoholic drinks, bath foam, and chocolate bars.
Takeout food was also the top reward for people who envisioned a good day.
Researchers also found that online shopping no longer felt like a pleasure.

What Conclusions Did the Team Reach?
Rewards after challenging tasks can take many forms—from food and drink to sensory experiences like baths, listening to music, or exercise. By satisfying emotional needs, these rewards affect a person’s health and well-being in different ways, lead researcher Suzanna Forwood said.
“The popularity of takeout food is linked to its dual benefit. Takeout lets people enjoy a favorite dish while avoiding the daily routine of cooking dinner. Many find that appealing after a successful or tough workday,” Forwood explained.
“While our study looked at only five specific behaviors, in real life everyone can choose what they believe benefits both their physical and mental health,” she added.
Forwood also cautioned, “Some of the options in the study offer clear benefits, but others can be harmful. Consuming takeout food, chocolate bars, and alcoholic drinks increases calories, sugar, salt, and alcohol intake, which can lead to health problems.”
